A remarkably preserved fossil stem of Equisetophyte Calamites sp. originates from the Carboniferous period in Illinois. Observe the distinctive nodes (horizontal bands) and internodal ribs (vertical lines), characteristic features of this ancient plant. This specimen is part of the extensive Cornell University Paleobotanical Collection, housed at Ithaca, New York. Measuring approximately 14 cm in length, the fossil provides valuable insights into the evolution of these fascinating plants. The model used to recreate this fossil was created by Emily Hauf.
