The Terracotta Army or Terracotta Warriors and Horses is a massive collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. Buried with him in 210-209 BCE, this form of funerary art was designed to protect the emperor in his afterlife. Discovered by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province in 1974, the figures date back to the late third century BCE. Ranging in height according to their roles, with generals being the tallest, they include warriors, chariots, and horses. Estimated in 2007, three pits containing the Terracotta Army held over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, most of which remain buried near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other non-military terracotta figures were found in separate pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Learn more about the Terracotta Army on Wikipedia here.
