Andrea Pisano, a renowned Italian sculptor and architect, hailed from Pontedera in 1290 and breathed his last in Orvieto in 1348. Also known as Andrea da Pontedera, he made a significant impact while residing in Florence by producing numerous notable works of marble sculpture, all reflecting the profound influence of Giotto's art. In 1340, Pisano took over from Giotto as the Master of Works at Florence Cathedral, where he created a series of reliefs that were possibly designed by his former mentor. Among these masterpieces is the double band of panel-reliefs that Pisano crafted for the magnificent campanile, featuring the Four Great Prophets, the Seven Virtues, the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Works of Mercy, and the Seven Planets. The duomo proudly showcases the chief among Pisano's other notable works in marble created during his Florentine period. In 1347, he assumed the role of Master of Works at Orvieto Cathedral, a project already underway by Lorenzo Maitani. These accomplishments, including the aforementioned doors, comprise Pisano's only known creations. Pisano played a pivotal role in liberating modern art from Byzantine influence before passing away in 1348.
