Horse Harness Pendant, Edinburgh Castle
sketchfab
This gleaming copper-alloy horse harness pendant sparkles with gilt and enamel flair. Once securely fastened to a horse's bridle, it would have been an integral part of the equine ensemble. Its classic circular shape is slightly marred by a broken suspension loop. The intricate design – a triple chevron within a shield frame – is a common motif in heraldic art. Harness pendants likely originated as far back as the 1100s or even earlier, although they are most commonly associated with the 1300s. Their decorations often prioritized ornate flair over heraldic significance. This exquisite pendant was unearthed during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989 and 1991.
