Horse

This magnificent, life-size horse embodies the unbridled power, agility, and exuberance of a thoroughbred racehorse in full gallop. Sturdy, rounded joints complement its robust, muscular physique perfectly. With its long neck stretched out to its maximum extension, head angled slightly to one side, ears pointed forward, and confident stride, the animal appears acutely attuned to its surroundings. However, the prominent divots, incisions, and striations etched into the form's surface serve as a poignant reminder that this majestic horse is crafted from heavy bronze. Elisabeth Frink's enduring passion for horses originated in her idyllic country childhood in Sussex, England, where her father was an accomplished horseman and amateur jockey. This innate enthusiasm persisted throughout her life, fueling her creative endeavors. It wasn't until she relocated to France in the late 1960s that Frink began to craft sculptures of horses, a subject matter she would continue to explore for many years, often depicting a horse in tandem with its male rider. This impressive statue was part of Christie's highly anticipated sale of Modern British & Irish Art on June 26th.
