This is a 10 cm long sample of hornblende featuring an angle between the two primary cleavages as one of its defining characteristics. To accurately identify hornblende, note the precise angle between these cleavage planes, which measures approximately 60 to 120 degrees – clearly visible in notes #1 and #2. In contrast, dark-colored pyroxene, often mistaken for hornblende due to its similar appearance, exhibits distinct cleavage angles of nearly 90 degrees.
