Horizontal Spool Filament Twister (Parametric, Fully Printable)
thingiverse
This attempt at creating a fully printable spool holder with no moving parts has one major flaw. Every time a loop of filament comes off the side it adds a twist, which eventually causes a big tangle that stops the print after some time (around 30 minutes). I'm still unsure about how to fix this problem, but I'll leave the design here in case someone wants it for short prints or something. This horizontal spool holder requires no moving parts and is fully 3D printable. It's been tested with a PLA roll so far and seems to be working well. The filament comes off the spool easily when pulled sideways, making this suitable for any extruder. I recommend making the screw as tall as your printer allows since the filament moves more smoothly when the guide stands higher. You can always adjust it later by moving the nuts down if you want a lower guide. To secure the filament guide in place, simply tighten the upper nut and loosen the lower one, squeezing the guide between them.
