This massive industrial device, known as 'wallcreeper', enabled precision flat surface creation on enormous metal pieces. It efficiently processed both horizontal and vertical surfaces without requiring workplace adjustments. Manufacturers reaped significant profits when shipbuilders and affiliated companies placed large orders for these machines. Built to last, this machine served the Renfrew maintenance works of the Clyde Navigation Trust from 1906 until 1984, demonstrating its reliability. Scottish manufacturers like Thomas Shanks & Co. produced high-quality machine tools for global companies, showcasing their exceptional production capabilities. The scale of Scottish manufacturing was enormous, and the development of machine tools facilitated the large-scale manufacture of iron and steel ships. This 3D model was created as part of the 'Scanning The Horizon' 3D Digitisation Project.
