Thorvaldsen maintained close relationships with the renowned painter Vernet, who spearheaded the French Academy in Rome from 1829 to 1835. The two accomplished artists traded portraits, resulting in this plaster rendition from 1832 that served as a foundation for the larger marble bust, which Thorvaldsen initiated in Rome in 1834 and Bissen completed in 1856.
