As I never got the results I wanted with the usual Chinese or the other homemade sharpening jigs I was searching for a better solution and low and behold, I found it (http://richardkell.co.uk/honingECom.htm). Unfortunately the price was rather steep (but justified) and I thought about building my own version of it. A little bit of thinking and playing around in the CAD and I had a version which was easier to build. Unfortunately you will need a lathe to machine the two shafts. Parts required (shown for max. 40mm blade width): 1x part A, printed 1x part B, printed 2x part C, printed 2x shaft, stainless steel Ø6mm x 80mm (to be machined according to drawing) 1x Allen head screw, stainless steel, M5 x 80mm, all thread 1x thread insert for wood with flange, M5 x 10 x 15mm 2x ball bearing, POM and glass (!), 45 x 25 x 9mm (6905 or 61095) Do NOT use steel ball bearings, only the plastic ones! Take the 2 parts C and place them into a ball bearing holding them together with 2 temporary M6 screws and nuts. Screw in the threaded insert (it's pretty tight), take it out again, put some Epoxy glue in the threads and screw it back in. Let well cure. Take parts A and cut M4 threads into the two smaller holes. Parts A and B are placed into the other bearing. Now screw in the machined 6mm shafts and tighten them we but not until the plastic threads break. Push the shafts thru their holes in the C-parts and thread the M5 screw thru A and B and into the threaded insert. Done..... Instead of the M5 screw one could also use a piece of ready rod and glue a long-nut onto one end. as all-thread screws of that length are pretty rare. A more detailed description in German language can be found here: https://www.die-heimwerker.net/t608f18-Schleifhilfe-honing-guide-fuer-Stechbeitel-und-Hobeleisen.html . Google translate should take care of other languages...... 2022-04-20: Just had an idea how you can get around without a lathe! Use 6mm SS-tubes (or brass) with 1mm wall thickness and glue a piece of M4 ready-rod into it! I still prefer the machined version but hey, it's a work around.
