The Makerbot Replicator's metal grid, located on one side of the fan and open on the other, produces a low-frequency "hum" due to its elasticity and free ends. This grid was designed specifically to eliminate this sound and add an attractive appearance. However, it may generate a higher pitch noise and decrease cooling effectiveness due to increased blockage, so a higher flow rate fan might be necessary. It is ideally suited for 0.4mm nozzles with most honeycomb structures measuring 0.8mm in size.
