This is a simple mold for making a honeycomb impression on top of cake. Note that the cake image above was made with bubble wrap. A coworker wanted a print that was bigger and easier to use. Print Settings Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2 Infill: 0.25+ Notes: The print is ABS plastic. I suggest a layer of 0.2 with a slow speed as you want the edges to be precise. I used 25% fill on mine, but a higher value may be in order, as when I did the acetone vapor bath some of the hex shapes ended up dimpled. More support material may help that. The vapor bath is required to get the smoothness needed to reduce the likelihood of icing sticking to the mold. When using it, consider using powdered sugar, like flour is used to help keep dough off a cookie cutter. The handle is 5mm thick on top and bottom and sides. It requires support material to build so that the top is flat. Post-Printing The vapor bath is a trial-and-error situation. The mold is soft enough when you can leave a fingerprint on top of a hex piece. The goal is to push down parts that stick up too high, so they approach being flat. I actually used a pin to pop a few places that stuck up. Your mileage may vary. Air dry the pieces overnight. I poured a bit of acetone into a small dish and put the small end of the handle in it for about 30 seconds. This softened the plastic. I placed it on the smooth side of the mold, as close to the center as possible. Then I put it in my bench vise and let it dry overnight. It was solid in the morning. Custom Section One change that might be made is to put a small indentation on the bottom of the mold, in the center, so the small end of the handle would fit there. That would simplify getting the handle exactly in the center. I'm interested in any suggestions you have for improving this model. I'd love to see pictures of your finished cakes.
