The Honda RC211V was developed in 2001 by Honda's competition department, HRC, to replace the Honda NSR500. This change came about due to drastic rule changes in the world motorcycle championship for the 2002 season. The new rules kept the 500cc limit for two-stroke engines with four cylinders, but allowed four-stroke engines with three or four cylinders up to 990cc. With this change, the class became known as MotoGP and was limited to racing prototypes. The RC211V was the first four-stroke motorcycle in the world speed championship.
