Human: Homo neanderthalensis Location: Neander Valley in Germany. Age: Approximately 40,000 years old, from the past. Material: A plaster cast reproduction is used. Dimensions: The length measures 238 millimeters; width, 58 millimeters; and height, 33 millimeters. Notes: Catalog number RLA-433rp16 indicates this as a replica. The fossil is the left ulna bone of Neanderthal man. It serves as the type specimen for the species. In 1856, Johann Carl Fuhlrott discovered it in the Neander Valley and reported his findings in 1857 with Hermann Schaaffhausen. Between 1930 and 1952, Mr. F.O. Barlow from R.F. Damon & Co. in London created a plaster cast of the fossil. It belongs to the educational collection of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
