The fossilized skull is the cranium vault, or calotte. It serves as the type specimen for Neanderthal humans, commonly known as Neanderthal 1. Discovered in 1856 and reported in 1857 by Johann Carl Fuhlrott and Hermann Schaaffhausen. The plaster cast was created by the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania.
