Homo Habilis (KNM ER 1813) Skull
thingiverse
The original model had to be removed due to a complaint from bone clones. The replica underwent a detailed process of scanning using a NextEngine 3D scanner, followed by skinning with Poisson surface reconstruction in Meshlab and error checking with Netfabb Studio. You can view a Blender rendering of this scan at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcaEwGoguz4&hd=1 and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/Homo_habilis-KNM_ER_1813.jpg. To add a personal touch, my daughter wanted a unique nightlight featuring the skull, so I inserted a RadioShack LED inside it, although the focus is poor in the attached photo. The Habilis skull was successfully printed using MakerWare software with a custom slicing profile, avoiding high detail as it crashes the software. A layer thickness of around .27 worked well for me, and the total build time was approximately 11 hours.
