Human: Homo erectus Location: Zhou Xian, China Age: Between 680,000 and 780,000 years old Material: Plaster cast Dimensions: 214 millimeters in length; 149 millimeters in width; 130 millimeters in height Notes: Cataloged as RLA number 1979rp44 due to being a cast. Skull discovered between 1929 and 1936 in a cave near Zhou Xian, but was lost during World War II. Cast created based on descriptions, photographs, sketches, and reconstructions by Davidson Black and Franz Weidenreich. Formerly classified as Sinanthropus pekinensis and Homo erectus pekinensis. The plaster cast was made by the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. Currently housed in the teaching collection of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a model created by Joy Mersmann.
