Homo sapiens' ancient ancestor, Homo erectus, is discovered in Sangiran, Java, Indonesia. The fossil is estimated to be between 0.7 and 1.6 million years old. A plaster cast of the fossil measures 174 mm in length, 140 mm in width, and 107 mm in height. Noted as RLA catalog number 1979rp5 (cast), the fossil was unearthed by G.H.R. von Koenigswald in 1937. Initially classified as Pithecanthropus erectus (Sangiran 2), the cranium is a significant archaeological find. Crafted by the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the cast is part of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology's teaching collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Modelled by Aidan Paul, this fossil provides valuable insights into human evolution.
