Laetoli is a renowned palaeontological site in northern Tanzania boasting an exceptional record that includes the earliest hominin footprints ever discovered (3.66 million years), unearthed in 1978 at Site G and attributed to Australopithecus afarensis. A groundbreaking paper reveals new hominin tracks found at Laetoli's Site S, indicating two individuals moving in tandem on the same palaeosurface as those documented at Site G. The dimensions of these fresh tracks strongly suggest a larger body size than that of the Site G hominins and yield stature estimates that surpass available maximum values for Au. afarensis, eerily comparable to average statures of modern Homo sapiens. Further details are posted on the School of Paleoanthropology website.
