Laetoli is a renowned palaeontological site situated in northern Tanzania, boasting an exceptional record that includes the earliest human footprints ever discovered (3.66 million years), unearthed in 1978 at Site G and attributed to Australopithecus afarensis. A recent paper reveals hominin tracks found in the newly excavated Site S at Laetoli, with evidence of two individuals moving in tandem in the same direction on the same palaeosurface as those documented at Site G. The dimensions of these new tracks strongly indicate a larger body size than that of the Site G humans and yield stature estimates that significantly surpass the maximum known values for Au. afarensis, making them comparable to average stature measurements of modern Homo sapiens. Further details can be found on the School of Paleoanthropology website.
