Homer

Homer, the renowned author of the Iliad and The Odyssey, is typically believed to have lived around 950 BC. Virtually all depictions of him in visual art forms appear to be based on a single bust housed at the Naples Archaeological Museum. This particular variant of the bust still conveys the likeness of Homer, albeit with a slightly weathered face, and is thought to have originated from a plaster cast created by Hoskins and Grant, expert moulder and caster for the Royal Academy in London. Unfortunately, the original sculptor remains unknown. The mould would have been obtained by the foundry at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg before being cast by 'E. Gastecloux', whose name is prominently featured on the reverse of most busts at Ekaterinesky Park's Cameron Gallery. The bust bears a striking resemblance to Rembrandt's 'Aristotle with a Bust of Homer' from 1653.
