Homemade Water Filter System CAUTION! This water filter design concept is not intended for human consumption. In everyday life, people rely heavily on water sources, often collecting it from rivers, swamps, or rainwater. Our family uses a shallow well, sometimes flooded with rainwater, which is manually pumped into an overhead tank containing muddy water that is cleaned annually. I designed this simple water filter system to meet our needs for washing clothes, dishes, and bathing. It consists of recycled materials: a plastic container with a threaded cap, scrap PVC pipe, fittings, and hose clamps. My 3D printed components include two barbs with unthreaded ends (for 1/2" diameter). Assembly is straightforward: drill two holes in the cap, insert elbows with one shorter PVC pipe (inlet) and another longer pipe (outlet), securing them with epoxy. The long pipe features small holes on its sides, wrapped with cloth (using socks tied with rubber bands). Connect each end to a barb fitting for hoses. Since these fittings are not readily available in our area, I designed my own 3D objects to fit the needed specifications. I also printed a hose clamp instead of purchasing one from a hardware store. To assemble the system, replace the container by threading it onto the cap and connect the hose. Attach the marked inlet to the water source. Maintenance is simple: unthread the container, remove the cloth, and wash (in our case, we clean the container daily and wash the cloth). CAUTION! This water filter design concept is not intended for human consumption. This design meets IKEA's Democratic Design principles: 1. Form - Simplicity 2. Function - Providing clean water for everyday use 3. Quality - Utilizing recycled and recyclable materials 4. Sustainability - Using recycled materials promotes a cleaner environment 5. Low price - Very low compared to commercial products, with almost zero maintenance costs
