When buying cheap items, it's only natural that they won't last forever. I recently purchased a standard trash can for my kitchen, but within weeks, the release button gave out on me. Instead of running out to buy another one, I decided to take matters into my own hands and design a replacement button with some improvements. The new release button uses two repurposed magnets as springs to provide extra reliability. These magnets came from some old cupboard magnets I had lying around at home. To complete the project, I needed a 5mm diameter steel bar that was 100mm long. After securing the new button in place using hot glue, it was good as new. The trash can's release button is roughly 100mm long, although some models may have shorter or longer ones, so be sure to adjust your drawings accordingly.
