Holm of Papa Westray South Chambered Cairn
sketchfab
This chambered cairn from the Neolithic era stands proudly on the uninhabited island of Papa Westray, located off the coast of Orkney. As a prominent member of the 'Maeshowe Group', this massive drystone structure showcases its impressive classification of monuments. Its entrance tunnel leads directly into a spacious central chamber that is divided by two sturdy cross-walls. From there, 12 side cells radiate outward, forming the internal framework within a large rectangular cairn. Excavated in 1849 by Captain F. Thomas, this ancient tomb revealed numerous examples of Neolithic artwork skillfully pecked into its interior stonework. Although no human remains were discovered, it can be inferred that this function was indeed present due to similarities with other chambered cairns. Visitors today can access the chamber through a hatch and ladder placed within the modern concrete roof, which was added in 1931. HES takes care of this site, allowing visitors to explore for free.
