Some time ago, I started digitizing my 35mm negatives. I've got two scanners for this purpose - the SilverCrest, which is the fastest but also has lower quality, and another scanner that requires manual holder insertion and progress. As I have a lot of 110 negative strips, the idea to create a custom holder for one of my scanners was born. My other scanner has a dedicated interface where you can scan exactly six negatives in a fixed holder, making it impossible to create a holder for 110 negatives. Therefore, I decided to focus on creating a holder for the SilverCrest. To insert and progress the holder manually, I needed to design a custom solution. As seen from the pictures and scad files I've added, getting a decent picture proved to be challenging. The first version was a good fit for both the negatives and the scanner but failed due to the auto white balance correction of the scanner. The plastic of the holder was displayed as pure white, resulting in black images on the negative (see picture). Before moving on to the second version, I drilled some holes in the holder to see if it would improve the situation (the light getting through the holes would be displayed as black, which I hoped would fool the auto white balance correction). This indeed helped a bit (see pictures). With this knowledge, I created the second version (scad and stl files with V0.2). However, the second version still didn't allow enough light to pass through to fool the scanner's auto white balance correction. So, I designed another version (scad and stl files with V1.0), which finally managed to deceive the scanner's white balance correction enough to produce acceptable pictures from negatives. The best results were achieved by starting the 'acquire' cycle for each negative individually. The scanner would then efficiently re-trigger itself to create a decent picture, with good color and contrast. In the meantime, I successfully scanned six rolls of negatives (25 each). Although it takes some work after scanning (clipping and color/contrast adjustment), the results are satisfactory. Enjoy! Printer Settings Printer Brand: RepRap Printer: Hesine Rafts: Yes Supports: No Resolution: .4 Infill: 20% Notes: I used rafts because I have difficulty getting my first layer correct. If you look in the scad files, there's a tolerance value you can adjust to suit your needs - change it if you prefer a tighter or wider fit.
