Human: Project: Adding a High Bed to the RV / DIY Etagenbett ( Loft Bed ) - A Budget-Friendly Solution I've found a basis for a Caravan Stockbed on Amazon, an affordable and stable Field Bed ~ lightweight, affordable, sturdy http://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B01BTV736C/ Requirements: 1. Add a high bed to the RV Length: 1.90m Width: 70cm Can withstand an adult weighing 90 kg Be able to use the seating group in rainy weather / demountable high bed Most affordable components No or minimal screwing of the frame into furniture/walls I used 3D techniques for planning and implementing my project "RV High Bed". While searching for a lightweight frame for an Etagenbett over the seating group, I came up with the idea to convert a Field Bed as base structure. I visualized this in SCAD beforehand as a model. I will use many parts from wood/metal which I'll saw and punctually supplement with 3D-printed components. The conversion is also possible without using 3D printed parts. A Field Bed weighs only 4.5 kg, consists of an aluminum frame with stretched fabric cover and three cross beams. With shortened middle legs it becomes a DIY Etagenbett ( Loft Bed ). This kind of stock bed weighs less than 10 kg thanks to the aluminum frame, can carry up to 100 kg after conversion, and can be installed/removed in just a few hand movements. Conversion: Add internal H-profiles made from 1m aluminum profiles at the middle section of the frame, saw off the middle legs and cut out a small transverse bar from the remainder. Attach this with an 8mm screw shaft to the shortened legs and crossbar. Add support for adults using a plank or for children add 1 m long angle profiles outside in the fabric. Optionally: print Winkel/Keil, Flügelmuttern and Beinhalterung using 3D printer or create from wood / buy 8er Flügelmuttern / attach between angles. Costs ~ €70 (excluding mattress) €30 for Field Bed (Amazon) €22 for Alu H-profile (hardware store) €6.0 kg for Feldbett including frame reinforcement €80 cm x 200 cm Klappmatratze We don't need a ladder, as we can climb onto the bed from the seating group's lying area. The fabric of the Field Bed has a small depression so you won't fall out. Both beds have approximately 70cm space until the ceiling. The Feldbett could be completely stored in its original transport bag if you remove the screws at the angle in the middle and the H-profiles. In our hobby, this is not necessary as the bed can fit under the table when folded up. Alternatively, I'll attach holders/clamps to the side curtain rails so we can secure the bed quasi at the ceiling during the day and use the seating group without demounting the bed. This is an example of how 3D techniques can be used in the DIY field. It surprises me that there are no ready-made high beds for RVs available on the market or at least frames with stretched springs (see Eriba link). When securing the legs, I designed and tested different designs. The most stable one goes completely around the plank and is screwed in addition. The hole for the leg is open to the top so that the Field Bed can be demounted. Instead of cable ties, I'll secure each leg with a string or shoelaces. No further instructions are necessary as the project is fully documented with diagrams and images.
