This system includes the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and blood itself. The heart pumps blood through these vessels, supplying oxygen to cells and tissues while removing carbon dioxide. The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the body. It consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The process begins with the breakdown of food in the mouth, where teeth chomp it into smaller pieces and saliva helps to mix it with enzymes. The nervous system is a complex network of nerve cells that transmit signals throughout our bodies. It includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These nerve cells communicate with each other through electrical impulses, allowing us to think, move, and feel sensations. The endocrine system produces hormones that regulate various bodily functions, such as growth and development, metabolism, and reproductive processes. This system consists of glands located throughout the body, including the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, testes, and others. Hormones produced by these glands help to control bodily functions and maintain overall health. The immune system protects us from disease-causing microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. It consists of various cells and tissues that work together to defend the body against infection and illness. The immune system includes white blood cells, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and the mucous membranes that line our respiratory, digestive, and genitourinary tracts. The muscular system is responsible for movement and maintaining posture. It consists of skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones and enable us to move our limbs, while smooth muscles are found in internal organs and help to control their function. Cardiac muscle makes up the heart itself and pumps blood throughout the body. The integumentary system is a network of tissues that protect the body from external damage. It includes the skin, hair, nails, and various glands that produce sweat, oil, and other substances. The skin acts as a barrier against infection and regulates body temperature.
