An intersection marker is a concrete prism, painted with black and white stripes. Within the types of railway signalling it would belong to the group of fixed indicator signals. Its function consists of signalling the point up to which the circulation is compatible for both tracks in the case of two converging tracks. As an example, there could be a situation in which a commercial traffic passes on one track while on another siding there is a shunting engine performing shunting operations. In this case, the shunting engine could not pass the crossing picket, since if it does so, the train traffic on the converging track would have to be stopped. It is not known with certainty when the crossing point was invented, but in Spain it appears in the Railway Traffic Regulations of 1954.
