HMS Leopard played a pivotal role in the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair, one of the most significant events in her illustrious career. Her keel was laid down at Portsmouth Dockyard in 1775, and after several years of construction, she was finally launched from Sheerness in 1790. Throughout her service, HMS Leopard participated in the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812. The Leopard is most renowned for her involvement in the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair. In 1812, her guns were removed, and she was converted into a troopship. On June 28, 1814, while en route from Britain to Quebec with a contingent of 475 Royal Scots Guardsmen on board, HMS Leopard ran aground on Anticosti Island in heavy fog. Miraculously, all hands survived the disaster as the ship was destroyed. The Chesapeake-Leopard Affair occurred in early 1807 when a small group of British sailors deserted their ships blockading French vessels in Chesapeake Bay and joined the USS Chesapeake's crew. In an attempt to recover these deserters, Captain Salusbury Pryce Humphreys, commanding HMS Leopard, hailed the USS Chesapeake and requested permission to search her. Commodore James Barron of the Chesapeake refused, prompting HMS Leopard to open fire. Caught off guard, Commodore Barron quickly surrendered, allowing Humphreys' boarding party to seize four deserters from the Royal Navy – three Americans and one British-born sailor. The deserters were taken to Halifax, where they received a harsh sentence: 500 lashes for treason. However, their punishment was later commuted. The Chesapeake-Leopard Affair had severe repercussions in the United States, pushing both nations perilously close to war. In the aftermath of this incident, Britain offered to return the American deserters, but not before Jenkin Ratford, a British sailor, was hanged for his crimes.
