Construction of the HMS Hood was initially ordered back in 1916, but a critical setback arose after the Battle of Jutland brought significant design flaws to light in Battle-Cruiser development. The ship was redesigned afterwards, aiming to become the biggest and most powerful vessel ever constructed - however by 1918 when she hit the open seas she was alarmingly outdated, her sister ships having been scrapped or cancelled. The Hood was overdue for a full modernisation overhaul at the time of her confrontation with the Bismark. Her leaky boilers, damaged steam pipes, badly fouled hull and faulty turbines restricted her to only 28 knots of speed - significantly short of her designed top speed of 32 knots. Moreover, her outdated armour couldn't hold a candle to newer vessels, and her cannons were of lower calibre compared to the Bismark. On May 24th 1941, during the Battle of Denmark Strait, HMS Hood met her demise when engaging with the Prince of Wales in battle against the German Bismark. A single shell penetrated her decks, reached the aft powder magazine and set off a chain reaction which shattered her stern and resulted in devastating loss of life. Only three out of 1418 on board survived, yet their nation's sacrifice galvanised both her country and the Royal Navy into an unbreakable bond. .: Key Features :.
