The HK21E is a German-made 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun designed by Heckler & Koch in 1961, based on the G3 battle rifle. It's used by armed forces in several Asian, African, and Latin American countries. The Fábrica de Braço de Prata in Portugal manufactured it as the m/968, while SEDENA in Mexico produced it as the MG21. In Germany, it's designated the G8. The E model is a revised version with improved reliability, efficiency, and lifespan. To achieve this, the receiver length was increased by 25 mm to provide more recoil space for the bolt group. This design improvement reduced the impact of recoil on accuracy. Reinforcing bars were added to the receiver for extra strength, guaranteeing a minimum service life of 60,000 rounds. Compared to older models like the HK21A1 and HK11A1, modern Export weapons feature several upgrades. A longer barrel shroud extends towards the front by 94 mm, increasing the sight radius. The barrel trunnion was modified, and a longer barrel was installed on the HK21E. A burst fire mode is now available as the fourth selector setting, using a polymer barrel handle. The rear sight features an adjustable drum, and a bipod with three-position height adjustment and 30-degree tilt mechanisms replaced the simple folding bipod. When used in the light machine gun role, the HK21E stores its ammunition belt in a 100-round sheet metal container attached to the bottom of the feed mechanism. An optional feed module kit allows for use of G3 or STANAG magazines with an additional bolt, recoil spring, and belt feed module. In the belt-fed medium machine gun role, the HK21E can fire over 1,000 rounds in quick succession without cook-off issues. The shock-absorbing tripod weighs 10.5 kg.
