A compact, drawer-style storage box for the board game Hive has been designed. It is meant to hold the complete game including all 3 current expansion pieces - the lady bug, mosquito, and pill bug. This was designed specifically for the full-size tiles, not the Pocket version. The existing Hive storage solutions were not satisfactory, so a custom solution was created. Printing the outer storage box with the longest dimension in the Z-axis is strongly recommended. Adding supports to the hole that the lid slides into is also necessary, and a brim may be needed to increase bed adhesion. Printing it laying "flat" was attempted, but cumulative distortion from all overhangs resulted in the inner drawer not fitting properly. About 6 millimeters of extra space are available on the interior of the inner drawer for adding material to cushion the tiles. Two pieces of 1/4" brown weather stripping were cut to size and used as a solution. The result is shown in one of the photos above, where the fit was improved significantly without having to design the tiles to be jammed tightly into the drawer. The logo was attached using cyanoacrylate (Super Glue). A backing plate was printed in black like the box, then the printer did a color change when printing the logo. Printing this is not necessary if you don't want to, but it produces a cool result with an orange logo. The lid slides in easily and stays put even when the storage box is bouncing around in a backpack.
