By that time, townspeople along with Count Csáky collectively built the first stone theatre (1776) roughly in the same place as today's historic building of the SND. The importance of the city began to decline during the 19th century. The city theatre was eventually rented by German and later Hungarian companies. In 1886, the new City Theatre building officially opened. It was built using a Neo-Renaissance style design by Helmer and Fellner’s Vienna theatre architecture company. The first performance took place featuring Erkel’s 'Bánk bán', presented by the Budapest National Theatre Company. Verism soon gained popularity in this very building; in fact, Bruno Walter gained his experience here as a teacher in the last year of the century. At the beginning of the new millennium, Brno Opera showcased a vast range through Czech classical opera and made its first presentation in Bratislava with Tchaikovski’s 'Eugen Onegin' and 'The Queen of Spades'.
