Historic Gravesite, Cape Canaveral, Florida

Gravesite of 14-month-old Joe E. Jeffords sits atop a unique concrete design at the Cape Road Cemetery (8BR233) on the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The grave's distinctive above-ground coping style defines its edge boundary, with name and dates carefully hand incised into its surface. As part of three pioneering families buried at the Cape Road location, the Jeffords settled in the area as fishermen and lighthouse keepers for historic coastal communities that now make up the Cape Canaveral Space Force base. Conducting research on early 19th and 20th century settlements, our USF Libraries DHHC team conducted a thorough 3D and geophysical survey at eight historic cemeteries and burial locations as part of a grant aimed at uncovering these pre-space activities and Cold War era uses of the Cape.
