Hippeastrum is a genus of approximately 90 plant species and over 600 hybrids and cultivars. These perennial herbaceous bulbous plants are characterized by large fleshy bulbs, tall broad leaves, and large red or purple flowers. Native to the Americas' tropical and subtropical regions, Hippeastrum belongs to Amaryllidaceae family, specifically its subfamily Amaryllidoideae, tribe Hippeastreae, and subtribe Hippeastrineae. Botanists have long confused this genus with Amaryllis, and as a result, the common name 'amaryllis' is often used for Hippeastrum cultivars sold as indoor flowering bulbs, particularly at Christmas in the northern hemisphere. Conversely, the generic term 'Amaryllis' refers to South African bulbs grown outdoors.
