Hip Replacement
sketchfab
Acetabular component The acetabular component is inserted into the acetabulum (hip joint). Cartilage and bone are removed from the acetabulum to make room for it. The acetabular component is secured with friction or cement. Some acetabular components are made as one piece, while others are assembled in modules. One-piece shells are either ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or metal, they have their articular surface machined on the inside of the cup and do not rely on a locking mechanism to hold a liner in place. Femoral component Metal heads are made of cobalt chromium for hardness. They are machined to size and then polished to reduce wear on the socket liner. Ceramic heads are smoother than polished metal heads, have a lower coefficient of friction than a cobalt chrome head, and will theoretically wear down the socket liner more slowly.
