We refer to the simple pin used in early car suspension systems, particularly on early Model T Ford vehicles, which allowed for a significant degree of flexibility between axles and wheels by using rubber or leather bushings at its joints. The early suspensions relied entirely on a chain that provided both lateral flexibility as well as axle articulation - when driven hard over obstacles this was prone to fatigue and subsequent failure resulting in complete wheel separation. The pivot point located between the two hinged units served the role of the central fulcrum from which these oscillations take place while also ensuring adequate space around all surrounding suspension components so they wouldn't become overly compromised under high loading scenarios such as cornering maneuvers.
