LZ 129 Hindenburg was a massive German commercial airship, the lead ship of its class and the largest flying machine ever built. The airship flew from March 1936 until it met a fiery end just 14 months later during its second season's final transatlantic journey. Thirty-six people lost their lives in the tragedy that occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. The event was widely covered by film, photography, and radio media. After completing its first South America flight of the 1937 season in late March, the Hindenburg departed Frankfurt for Lakehurst on May 3 to begin its first scheduled round trip between Europe and the United States that year. Although strong headwinds slowed its passage, the flight proceeded normally as it approached the landing site three days later. On May 6 at around 7:00 p.m., the Hindenburg, with Captain Max Pruss at the helm, approached Lakehurst Naval Air Station at an altitude of 650 feet and prepared to land. Just 25 minutes later, the airship caught fire and was engulfed in flames within 37 seconds due to the highly flammable nature of hydrogen gas. The initial location of the fire, its source, and the fuel that sparked it remain a subject of debate. Out of the 36 passengers and 61 crew on board, 13 passengers and 22 crew members lost their lives, along with one ground crew member, resulting in a total of 36 fatalities. This incident is remembered as one of the most dramatic accidents in modern history, with many theories proposed but none confirmed as the cause. However, it's widely accepted that had the Hindenburg been filled with helium instead of hydrogen, the disaster would not have occurred.
