On the southernmost tip of Walney Island stood a formidable artillery installation consisting of four sturdy octagonal gun emplacements (gun holdfasts), an ammunition depot and a rectangular fortified bunker. The concrete gun platforms were solid foundations with ten strategic iron bolts arranged in a circle to securely mount the gun, a powerful 6-inch hand-loaded coastal defense cannon.
