Highbury Fields Tube Vent

A small, round structure cleverly conceals a ventilation shaft serving the Victoria Line of London's Underground system. Situated within the playground at Highbury Fields, it seamlessly blends in. The building houses a toilet facility and an office for the park supervisor, who oversees the play area. At its center lies the vent itself, discreetly camouflaged to avoid drawing attention. Surrounding the structure is an intricate mosaic designed by Magnus Irvin. The artwork adds a touch of whimsy to the otherwise utilitarian building. Next to it stands a large mound of excavated earth, topped with a slide that winds its way down. This pile of soil was left over from digging the ventilation shaft. Built during the 1960s, this structure has stood the test of time. Recent photographs taken in June 2020 using a Sony a6000 camera capture its current state. To fill in gaps, the roof texture was digitally merged with a Google Maps aerial image, as ground-level photography proved impossible due to spatial constraints.
