I am replacing plastic linear bushings with ball bearing bushings. Some of the bearing holders cracked under pressure from over-tightening the screws. I have decided to design new bearing holders for the printer bed. The initial design incorporated wire ties. For the final design, I will use heavy-duty stainless steel 5/16" wide hose clamps. The result is a quality bearing holder that will fit the LM10UU linear bearing. The mounting holes are 32 mm x 25 mm apart from center to center. The holes are fitted with M3 brass inserts. I have designed bearing holder V4.stl, which allows the bearing to pivot in the middle, correcting minor misalignment caused by the bed mount plate. Combining this ability to pivot with adjustable tension on the bearing holder will eliminate binding of the X-axis and off-round issues with prints. Design Elements: - Easily swap bearings - Adjustable tension - Pivot - Low profile for equal or more printing height Post-Printing: You can find the brass insert I used at www.mcmaster.com. The part number is 94180A331. It's an M3-.5 internal thread, 3.8mm length brass insert. To install the insert, you'll need a tweezer, Popsicle stick or similar, and a fine tip soldering iron. Heat up the iron to about 350 degrees Celsius. Face the iron upwards. Place the brass insert onto the soldering iron with the narrow side facing upward using the tweezer. Wait for 5 seconds, then position the bearing holder towards the brass insert. Push the insert into the bearing holder with gentle persuasion until only a little of the brass insert is protruding from the bearing holder. Pull the soldering iron away and place it on a secure location. While the plastic is still malleable, use the Popsicle stick to push the rest of the brass insert level with the bearing holder underside. Repeat steps 2-7 until all the brass inserts are in place. I personally prefer my inserts to be seated more deeply, so I use the round edge or the Popsicle stick to push it further into the bearing holder.
