Hexmail - hex chainmail - reinforced remix
thingiverse
I printed out Tailor's Hexmail to try to use for functional armor pieces for LARP, but I found that since the clips that connect them also take the entire force of a hit that they tend to snap. I had the idea to add support columns into the middle of each piece to help distribute the load away from the clips. Then I used that model to create edge filler pieces to allow you to create rectangular pieces using the hexes. Finally I added a hole to the middle of the top and bottom edge pieces so it can be easily attached to things, such as armor. Holes are 5mm diameter, so 550 cord will fit through them. I printed mine out of ABS with my high strength settings with a .4mm nozzle, comprised of .8mm layer thickness, .2mm layer height, 2 walls, 4 top and bottom layers, 25% infill, random seam placement. The pieces can still pop off if hit near the edges, but I find they are far less likely to break.
