Modern Hexagon Tape Dispenser Design Created from ScratchDesigning this model was quite the challenge. Starting off I knew I wanted a modern look while in some way changing the normal function of a tape dispenser. So, I strived to place the tape roll in many orientations. After many fails and terrible designs, I finally decided to placed it on a 45 degree angle (which after testing can also sit upright).With many tape dispensers out here in the 3d printing world, I became well aware it can be hard to have a nice cut piece of tape. With this in mind, I reframed from modeling one, and rather find something I know most household would carry. This was some aluminum foil/clear wrap/parchment or wax paper boxes. In these boxes there is a cutting edge that is easily removable and cuttable with even a scissors. I knew this would be perfect to use for my model as these generally all measure about 0.3mm in thickness. And so, the journey begins… Key Model DetailsThis design consists of two printable parts: a cap and main body. The idea behind this was to keep the model support free, which it so happened to do so. It also allows the user to place the roll of tape inside the model as shown in the model pictures. Below is a cross section of my model showing the two parts but also a hand full of lines on the bottom. This is a new technique I learned about which essentially allows the modeling of solid infill in specified areas. This is done by creating very thing slits inside the model itself to allow the slicer program of your choice to add additional walls in these areas to add weight to the model. *Note - this design has tight tolerances and is compensated with a 0.15mm gap between parts. Be sure your using a well tuned printer for this model for best results.Model AssemblyWhen your parts are printed you will have to verify if there are any blobs/strings/excess filament in the connecting pieces. Most importantly, keep the cutting strip slot free to allow good fitment (I used a hobby knife to clear this slot). This model simple connects together in the three areas shown below.Once everything is cleaned up you will need a cutting strip. As mentioned before this can be found on many kitchen paper boxes. I have included pictures below to show exactly what you are looking for. This strip is easily removable and cuttable with a simple scissors. This will have to be cut to size to fit directly in the main body slot provided. Here is a picture below for sizing, I found this pictured size is the largest you can go. (23.6mm)After this piece is cut, you may want to flatten out those holes to make your life easier. This can be done with any pair of pliers but flat faced ones work best. Then you are ready to slide your cutting strip into its slot. This can be secured with a dot of superglue but is not needed. Be careful not to bend the strip but more importantly do not cut yourself! I am not responsible for your injuries.*If you find the strip too long you can simply trim one side of teeth off the cutting strip.Finally you can add your 26mm (inner diameter) roll of tape. I used the standard desktop Scotch Tape for my dispenser. Before placing the cap, now is a great time to pull the tape through. The sticky side needs to be facing the back allowing for the smooth side to glide along the body of the dispenser. Now all that is left is to place on the cap and your ready to go! Print SettingsLayer HeightThe pictured models were printed at a 0.16mm (Prusament Galaxy Black Parts) and 0.2mm (PolyTerra Army Blue Parts) layer height.Infill10% gyroid is recommended, there are predetermined areas with 100% infill built into this model.SupportsNone!
