Robotics Video
Watch a brief tutorial on how to assemble the RoboBug, a beginner-friendly robotics project.
What is the RoboBug?
A fun and educational running robot for beginners and experienced developers: The Hexapod RoboBug combines electronics, mechanics, and digital high-performance servos. Build your own Hexapod running robot and enter the exciting world of robotics with this project! The "Hexapod RoboBug" is an ideal basis for entering fields like electronics, mechanics, and programming: it offers many extension possibilities using user boards such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi or NodeMCU. You can also add a wide range of additional components. The robot can be controlled either without programming using a remote controller or automatically with the help of a user board. This makes it perfect for hobbyists, researchers, schools, education, and training. It encourages independent development and expansion.
What Makes it Special?
The centerpiece of the Hexapod RoboBug is the locomotion controller board. Combined with open-source locomotion software, the controller coordinates the 18 servos to achieve smooth and naturalistic movement of each leg. This foundation for all movement processes is already established, allowing you to focus on programming your own RoboBug: making it intelligent! Even beginners can easily set up their first automated sequences of movements. Experienced developers will find challenges such as teaching the RoboBug to follow an object or simulate the behavior of a real bug. There are countless ideas waiting to be implemented!
Behind the Project
The inventor and developer of the RoboBug is Ulli Sommer, a hard- and software developer and author of several learning books. His goal was to create a platform that helps beginners, professionals, mechanics, and software specialists take their first steps into comprehensive robotics. The project had to be easy, open, and extendable. After one and a half years of development and prototyping, the “Hexapod RoboBug” was ready for launch in October '18.
