Time-lapse video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOy8Z-Ftdmg These are little hexagons that you can connect together. They work great for making art pieces, place mats, or showing young children how hexagons fit together. I will add a picture of the printed model in about a week's time. Print Settings Printer Brand: Printrbot Printer: Simple Black Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 2mm layer height Infill: 50% How I Designed This 3D Design I made the model using OpenSCAD, which allowed me to use for-loops for the connectors and custom cylinders for the shapes. Project Details Project Name: Hexagonal Connectors Overview & Background By completing this project, kids can learn some basic geometry and how hexagons relate. It can also be used as an art medium if printed in multiple colors. Objectives Students would learn some basic geometry, like how hexagons relate, and how to be creative with shapes. Audiences This project is intended for children at the elementary school level, but it's also suitable for anyone who wants to create some art or build blocks together. Subjects This would definitely be an Art and Math project. Skills Learned (Standards) Some skills that can be earned include basic geometry understanding, creative thought, or math skills if used as addition tiles. Lesson/Activity Group Build Activity Distribute pieces to all students or groups depending on how many pieces you have. Let them build for a set time. Let students/groups share their design with the class. Complete worksheet after (depending on age of the class) (may be substituted for class discussion). Done. Duration The activity can last 15-45 minutes, depending on depth into the activity and student engagement. Print time is not included. Preparation Print off pieces ahead of time. Preferably during class time, a few days in advance, so students can learn about how 3D printing really works.
