Hex Spool Holders
prusaprinters
Designed spoolholders with hexagons for my newly-assembled MMU3. The optional embedded magnets help them snap together for compact storage when not in use. Should be universal across spool sizes. BOM 2x Spool Holder (Holds Single Spool):2x - InnerWall printed part2x - OuterWall printed part4x - 608 Bearing8x - 6x3mm cylindrical neodymium magnets (optional) Slicing:Two versions of the InnerWall and OuterWall files are included. The recommended versions to print include the anti-warp mouse ears. There are many sharp edges on this print that love peeling up from the build plate. Also included is the PrusaSlicer project file and the presliced gcode for MMU3 that I printed with, see below for more details.I printed the parts in PETG (230C) with “soluble” PLA (205C) supports (0 contact distance). Since PLA and PETG do not really adhere to each other the supports peel off pretty easily, but there are some unfortunate side effects. In the presliced gcode I attached, the PETG speeds are turned way down to 20 mm/s and PETG temps turned up to 245C on layers directly above the support interface. This ensures a good surface, even though the adhesion to the PLA is poor. The purge volume is also increased for the PETG → PLA toolchanges. If you plan to use PETG with PLA supports I would recommend using the presliced gcode file.If you choose to use the magnets, insert a pause into the print before the toolchange that bridges the magnet holes (I added a manual M601 command into the gcode). Mark the same pole of each magnet with a sharpie. Fit two magnets sharpie-side DOWN into the holes in each InnerWall. Fit two magnets sharpie-side UP into the holes in each OuterWall. Some light tapping with a rubber mallet was required to make sure my magnets became fully seated. Make sure the magnets are either flush or below the level of the last printed layer. If you print several spoolholders, be sure to maintain the same magnet orientation for each print. Assembly:Press fit the 608s onto the axles of the OuterWall. Before press fitting the InnerWall axles into the 608s, apply a moderate amount of superglue to the areas where the printed parts should touch to ensure the assembly remains together. Finally, press fit the InnerWall onto the bearings and hold everything together while the superglue dries.Congrats, there are now more hexagons in your life!
