Hex Crate (parametric)
prusaprinters
This is a parametric, open-top, five-sided crate. Its original design was to keep grades of sanding blocks at hand at my down-draught table. To save plastic and printing time I used hexagon grids instead of solid walls. My own crates are in PLA. The user can specify the crate dimensions, the hexagon size, and its gridwork thickness right into the hex_crate.scad textfile; the file contains instructions on how to do this. The top can be flat or short at one end and tall at the other for an angled opening. Mounts are included at one side, but they can be commented out or re-positioned with a little fussing about. If the user opts for an angled top but wants the mounts on the opposite wall, exchanging the tall and short walls will effectively place the mounts where they're wanted. All of these choices can be written into the textfile hex_crate.scad. To create an .stl, download and run a copy of OpenSCAD. it's a completely free download. I did not upload an .stl as that would undermine the flexibility of user-defined dimensions. I printed my versions of these on a mk2.5s and a mk4 without supports.Note that my hex-crate.scad contains a mix of imperial and metric dimensions. I apologise if this seems confusing. The crate sizes may all be user-specified in mm (without units) so, for example, “x = 3*inch” may be replaced with “x = 76.2” without damage. Still, it will be best to leave the fraction-inch definitions (half, quar, & aith) since they are used deep in the program's smokey backroom figuring. Best not to monkey with them. Finally, note that the area dimensions are centre-to-centre. This means that outer dimensions will be greater by one frame thickness, and inner dimensions lesser by one frame thickness, than the stated dimension. So an x specified as 75 mm will be a skinny 72 mm shorter in the interior and slightly over 78 mm outside.
