This statue is a 3rd Century AD replica of a Greek model from the 4th Century BC. Herodotus (c. 484 BC – c. 425 BC) was an ancient Greek historian born in Halicarnassus within the Persian Empire (modern-day Bodrum, Turkey). He wrote "The Histories," a detailed account of his investigation into the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars. His work is widely regarded as the first to use a systematic method of research—specifically, gathering information and arranging it into an historical narrative. For this reason, he is often called "The Father of History," a title originally bestowed on him by Cicero, the first-century BC Roman orator.
