Prehistoric Carved Boulder Unveils Ancient Secrets in Newby Moss, North Yorkshire. A remarkable discovery made in 1999 by Arthur and Anita Batty and Noel Crack during surveys has revealed a stunning carved rock in the Herningside area of Newby Moss, south of Ingleborough. As one of several carved rocks unearthed, this particular boulder stands out for its intricate design. A 2010 photogrammetric survey conducted on this stone has shed light on its features, including up to 20 cups adorned with single rings and a cup boasting an inner and offset outer ovoid ring with possible grooves radiating outward. The presence of connecting grooves on other cups is also noteworthy. Since the 2010 recording, some of the fractured stone featuring cup marks has been relocated. This raises intriguing questions about the deliberate selection of rock type in this cluster. Were limestone carvings weathered away over time, or was sandstone chosen for its unique properties? The Yorkshire Dales NPA HER record provides further insights into this enigmatic discovery, accessible at https://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=2118513&resourceID=420. A 3D model created from six images captured by Richard Stroud in May 2010 offers a detailed view of the panel. Notably, this carving remains unrecorded on ERA.
