Disc herniation occurs when a part of the spinal disc bulges out through a tear in its outer layer. This can put pressure on nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness or tingling sensations in the back, arms or legs. A herniated disc is often caused by age-related wear and tear on the spine, but it can also be triggered by lifting heavy objects, bending or twisting incorrectly, or being involved in a car accident.
